Carry-on Essentials for the Pregnant Traveler

I have entered the third trimester of my pregnancy right as the holiday season commences. And, like many, I am scheduled to travel for family celebrations. Before I jet off, I visit my OB who clears me for travel. I also pack my travel bag with all the essentials for a pregnant traveler. Here’s what’s in my DVF Large Leather and Suede Hobo Bag:

Sockwell Compression Socks – Flying and sitting for extended periods of time when pregnant may increase the chance of forming blood clots. That’s why it’s important to stand and walk during flights. Compression socks may also help alleviate this issue. Your OB can provide recommendations for wearing compression socks and offer other tips to keep you and your baby safe and healthy while traveling.

Bobs Oat Bars – A satisfying whole-grain, vegan and gluten-free snack that I have in my bag every day. A bag of cashews, pumpkin seeds, dried cherries and dark chocolate is also one of my favorite traveling snacks.

No Drama Discipline – Air travel is the perfect opportunity to relax, catch up on sleep or read a good parenting book. Right now I am ensconced in No Drama Discipline, a book that helps parents use strategies to develop a child’s brain to make the right choices in life. Or in the authors’ words “to reach your child, redirect emotions, and turn a meltdown into an opportunity for growth.” It has proven enormously helpful with my beautiful, young 5 year old.

Eucerin Advanced Repair Hand Creme – Non-greasy, fast absorbing hand lotion when traveling is a must. I wash my hands and use sanitizer (I love Honest Company’s Lavender Hand Sanitizer Spray) constantly to stave off germs, especially when pregnant, a time when a woman’s immune system is naturally suppressed.

Estee Lauder Revitalizing Supreme Anti-Aging Cell Power Creme and Anti-Aging Eye Balm – These are a luxurious addition to my carry-on bag. Traveling dehydrates my skin and these two products nourish and rejuvenate my face and eyes.

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer – The first and third trimesters are when a pregnant woman is more exhausted than normal, and I find that a good concealer revives sleepy eyes.

The Estee Edit Coco Balm in Berry – This is a luxurious coconut balm with a burst of color that keeps my lips hydrated and brightens my face.

Altoids – A strong mint isn’t just for fresh breath, but a great trick for waking yourself up in a natural, non-caffeinated way.

Water – Before heading to my gate for departure, I always purchase a large bottle of water for the flight. Staying hydrated while flying and while pregnant is essential for a healthy trip.

Chanel Square Chain Sunglasses – Just because they are my favorite eyewear at the moment.

And, don’t forget your prenatal vitamins!
